LinkedIn

LinkedIn has the smallest minimums among all ad platforms. Audiences as small as 300 contacts can serve ads. LinkedIn also has an upper limit of 300,000 contacts per audience.

On LinkedIn, bigger is not always better. Tightly targeted audiences of 500-5,000 contacts often outperform large, broad audiences because you're reaching exactly the right people. ContactLevel's high match rates on LinkedIn (80-99%) mean even small audiences have strong coverage.

Meta (Facebook/Instagram)

Meta's algorithm benefits from having more data to optimize against. Their minimum audience size for custom audiences is 100 contacts, but performance improves significantly with larger audiences.

  • Awareness / outbound warming: 5,000+ contacts

  • Direct-response / conversions: 30,000+ contacts

  • Lookalike seed audience: 500+ contacts

Smaller audiences will work for simple targeting, but Meta's delivery optimization performs best with larger pools. If your audience is under 5,000 contacts, consider using "awareness" or "traffic" objectives rather than "conversions" to ensure your ads are served to more of your audience.

Google requires a minimum of 1,000 contacts for Customer Match audiences to serve. Google also requires your account to meet Customer Match eligibility (90 days history + $50,000 lifetime spend).

For best results:

  • Targeting campaigns: 20,000+ contacts recommended for reliable ad delivery

  • Similar audiences (Lookalikes): Smaller lists work well as seed audiences

  • Exclusion audiences: Any size works — great for excluding competitors, existing customers, or non-ICP contacts

Upload at least 5,000 contacts to ensure ads start serving. Google's Audience Manager shows "active users" (people recently logged in), which is typically lower than your total matched count.

Reddit

Reddit requires a minimum of 1,000 matched users for an audience to be valid. Audiences below this threshold may appear as "invalid" in Reddit Ads Manager.

For stable delivery and optimization, aim for 5,000-10,000+ matched users. Smaller audiences can still serve, but delivery depends on subreddit activity, match rate, and daily budget.

X (Twitter)

ContactLevel currently supports X through manual export. Recommended audience sizes are 5,000+ contacts for reliable delivery. Real-time syncing for X is actively being developed.

What If Your Audience Is Too Small?

If your ContactLevel audience doesn't meet a platform's minimum, you have several options:

  • Add more contacts using Contact Search or CSV Upload to increase your audience size

  • Use a different platform — LinkedIn supports audiences as small as 300, while Google requires 1,000

  • Combine audiences — if you have multiple small audiences targeting similar ICPs, consider merging them into one larger audience

  • Focus on platforms with lower minimums first — start with LinkedIn or Meta while building a larger list for Google and Reddit

Processing Time Expectations

After syncing your ContactLevel audience, ad platforms need time to process and match your contacts. During this time:

  • Your audience may show as "Building" or "Populating"

  • Match rates and audience counts may increase as processing completes

  • Don't make targeting changes until processing is complete

Allow the full processing time before evaluating match rates or audience sizes. Checking too early can give misleading results.
